This guide will show you what you need to know to get the best start with the Athlinks Race Day App. Since the App Builder contains excellent detailed instructions and videos for every step of configuration, this guide will not guide you through the whole process of setting up the App. Before you begin the configuration of the app, there are several things you should have ready in advance such as graphics, maps, and some related information.
We do have a short FAQ compiled from certain questions that have come up since RaceDay's release, which can be found HERE.
Remember that if you publish your App before some features are filled in, those features' icons will still show up in the App. Athletes will see a message asking them to check back later when they click on icons for features that are not set up yet. Because of this, we recommend that you complete every possible feature before initially publishing the app.
Preparing for the Features
Background Image - This image is the main background for the App's home screen and should be at least 640 x 1136 pixels (.jpg format). Higher resolutions will provide a much crisper image on high-definition displays, but be careful to maintain the aspect ratio to avoid warping. If you put branding on the image, it's best to place it near the bottom of the image to avoid it being covered by the buttons and slug.
Branded Photo Frame - This image should be a .png file with a resolution of 1536 x 1536 pixels. The image should contain a frame or banner somewhere near the perimeter with the majority of the image being transparent. Athletes can use the Branded Photo feature to take pictures with the image overlaid.
Event Logo (Slug) - Referred to as the "Slug" in the app, this is the image that appears to athletes when they search for your event in the App. This image should be a .jpg with a resolution of 109 x 60 pixels.
Vendor Map - This map is an opportunity to give your sponsors a place to show off and advertise. Typically this map will show the layout of your expo. Images should be either JPG or PNG
Since populating this map with information will likely require coordination with your vendors concerning content, images, and videos, it's best to start gathering information for this map's touchable regions as early as possible.
Course Map - This map can only have one image, so if you have multiple courses, it's best to combine them into one JPG or PNG file.
For the Vendor Map and Course Map, there is no resolution requirement for the images, but it's best that the images are high resolution for the best user experience. Once you upload the image, the App Builder will allow you to add touchable regions over the images where you can enter text, images, and videos.
The touchable regions will display to the athlete with pulsing yellow outlines as shown here:
Announcements (Optional) - The announcement feature lets you send out timed messages to anyone who has downloaded your event in the app. These announcements can contain text, links, images, and videos. You should give some thought to how you would like to use this feature since it can serve a wide variety of uses from providing logistical information, reminders, and promotions for vendors or your own services. Since Announcements can be scheduled to send at a selected time, it's best to get Announcements set up in advance when possible.
Tracking (Optional) - The race day app allows athletes and spectators alike to track the progress of athletes on the course via the GPS in a runner's phone. This requires that a Roster be uploaded to the event with the required information. For details on this, see the Roster section of the App Builder.
The App Builder will allow you to set up your course in Google Earth within the Builder. If you'd prefer to set up the course outside of the app within Google Earth, you can simply upload a existing .kml file to the App Builder.
Once the map is complete, you can add points of interest including water stops, timing points, medical stations, etc. It's best to get the information for each of these aspects ahead of time if you're intending to add them to the tracking map.
Note: For best results with tracking, instruct athletes to make sure their phone's location services are turned on and that the RaceDay app has been granted access to location data.
Links to External Pages - The App contains the option to include buttons that re-direct users to external websites including the Event Web Page, Schedule Page, etc. Before you set up the app, make sure these destinations are ready with the correct information.
