Ryobi Battery Model Overview (Updated July 2019)
Ryobi has discontinued production of the P108 battery, but now has two new 4Ah options to choose from as well as 6Ah and 9Ah offerings. Here's a breakdown of the model numbers and capacities:
Runtimes listed above are approximate. Your mileage may vary depending on environmental conditions and how the controller is being used.
The main difference between the P192 and P197 is the "HP Technology [that] communicates with brushless tools". Performance in controllers should be the same for both models, so choose whichever is cheaper.
FAQ
Q: Will my Pro2 or Mini work with the Ryobi P193 (6Ah) or P194 (9Ah) batteries?
A (Physically): The 6Ah P193 will fit inside a Pro2's upper battery ports with the lid shut, but the 9Ah P194 battery will NOT. ONLY the 4Ah P108, P192, or P197 batteries will fit in the internal battery port. ONLY the 4Ah batteries will fit inside a MiniTrack with the lid closed.
A (Electrically): If the controllers have the "Battery Mod V2.0" sticker, then all batteries listed in the table above are safe to use in both the MiniTrack and Pro2 controller. If your controller does not have these stickers, it will need to receive a physical modification to prevent the 6Ah and 9Ah batteries from tripping fuses on the power board.
As of March 23, 2019, ALL new Pro2 controllers are guaranteed to have the necessary modifications. MiniTracks have been receiving the modification for the past 6 years.
To upgrade controllers, they will need to be sent to ChronoTrack's Evansville office to receive the modification. Always speak to your Regional Sales Manager or Timer Support before sending in a controller.
Q: How do I install the Pro2's internal battery?
A: The internal battery can be installed by removing the four thumb screws from the four corners of the blue controller deck and then flipping the deck. The image below shows where the battery is installed. Since the Pro2 charges batteries, we recommend that you leave the internal battery installed at all times and only switch out the external batteries when fresh batteries are needed during a race.
Q: Will a MiniTrack charge Ryobi batteries?
A: Only the Pro2 or an approved Ryobi charger can can charge batteries.
Q: How do I charge the batteries with a Pro2?
A: When a controller is plugged into AC power, it will automatically charge the batteries when the controller is powered on. If you turn the controller off while it's plugged into AC power, the batteries will continue to charge as indicated by the battery LED lights. If the controller is already off and you plug in AC power, you can start charging by briefly "bumping" the Pro2's power switch. You'll know charging has started when you see the Battery LEDs on the head unit turn on.
Q: How do I know if the batteries are charging?
A: Whether the controller is on or off, the "Ready" LEDs on all detected batteries should be lit, and the red "In Use" LED for the battery that is currently being charged should be flashing. ONLY ONE BATTERY WILL BE CHARGED AT A TIME.
Q: How do I know if the batteries are fully-charged without turning on the controller?
A: When the batteries are fully-charged, you'll see the "Ready" LEDs for each inserted battery lit solid green, and the red "In Use" lights should all be off. If an "In-Use" LED is flashing, the controller is still charging that battery. You can also remove the batteries from the controller and press the green battery level button on the front of the battery itself.
Q: I've got a battery in the controller that isn't showing the "Ready" or "In-Use" light. Is it charging?
A: If you've installed a battery that is completely dead, it may take the controller longer than normal to detect and begin charging that battery. The controller will eventually detect the battery, so just be patient. Remember that you must have at least 2 batteries in the controller for the batteries to charge.
Q: Will the controller keep batteries topped up after it's fully charged them once?
A: Yes, as long as AC power is still plugged in.
Q: Will the controller charge completely dead batteries?
A: Yes, but there must be at least 2 batteries in the controller for it to charge a dead battery. Both batteries can be completely dead, however.
Q: If I leave the batteries in the controller with AC power plugged in, but I haven't initiated charging, will the batteries still drain over time?
A: Unless there is current going directly to the batteries, the batteries will slowly discharge. Because of this, we recommend that if you intend to leave batteries in the controller, you should have the controller on AC power and charging the batteries.
